Hi, I'm a Canadian with Parkinson's, just beginning disability and would like to move to Thailand. I have some questions that I'm hoping someone can help me with. My Parkinson's specialist is in Canada. My insurance covers 80% of my PD medication, but I must buy my medication in Canada to use my insurance plan. When moving to Thailand, I would need to fly back to Canada to see my specialist and buy a year's worth of medication. Once I'm in Thailand, I'm wondering if it's possible for me to see a Parkinson's specialist in Thailand and buy my medication in Thailand. 1 - Do I need a referral to see a specialist in Thailand? Is it hard to get an appointment? 2 - Is there a way for me to find out the cost of buying my current medication in Thailand? I would have to pay 100% of it because my Insurance plan through work only can be used in Canada. But if I buy in Thailand then I don't need to return to Canada every year. 3 - What is the cost per specialist appointment? Thanks. Any advice or help is appreciated.

In Thailand, it's not difficult for foreigners to see a specialist doctor but you have to come to a private hospital. You may make an appointment with doctor by calling to hospital to ask what time and date the doctor's on his duty then you can come to see him.

With Parkinson's, you have to ask for neurologist or neuro physician. Mostly they'll be in main provinces such as Bangkok, Chiangmai, Hatyai, Nakhonratchasima, depends on which city you live. It's easier in Bangkok because there're many private hospital here and most of them have a neuro physician.

You should bring all your current medications when you see a doctor. The referral from your specialist that includes all your past treatment and investigation may be helpful for the doctor to learn your disease and your specialist's plan.

I'm not sure which medicine you have but some Parkinson's medicine such as levodopa cost 15-30 Thai bahts(THB) per tab depends on the hospital.

You have to pay for a hospital fee and a specialist fee. The price is also varied, mostly 500-1000 bahts per visit.

You may tell which area and city you live so I can recommend some hospital for you.

As I know, in Thailand, Amantadine is in form of tablet 100mg which costs about 25 bahts per tablet. But in form of powder, I'm not sure.

Rasagiline(1) 80-100 bahts/tablet

These are approximate price. It depends on the hospital so you may check again.
